We condemn the persecution carried out by the Guatemalan government against those who defend territories from the depredation of extractive industries.

El CLACSO Working Group on Indigenous Peoples, Autonomies and Collective Rights Its mandate is to monitor and support the struggles of Indigenous peoples in Latin America. In this capacity, we have followed with concern the actions of the Guatemalan state against the communities and peoples defending their territories against the predatory activities of extractive industries.

That is why we strongly condemn the persecution being carried out against journalist Carlos Ernesto Choc Chub, for documenting for the media outlet Prensa Comunitaria the role of the Guatemalan government in the irregular activities of the Solway company, which extracts nickel in El Estor, Izabal.

Similarly, we support Prensa Comunitaria, whose articles we have published in our Bulletin Autonomous Communities Today, in its work of publicizing the arbitrary actions and violence of the Guatemalan State and the struggles of the people for their rights.
