“Rethinking pedagogies and public education”

On August 13 and 14, the International Conference “Challenges for educational research from the pandemic” was held virtually, organized by the Ministry of Education of Argentina, the Latin American Council of Social Sciences, the CLACSO Working Group “Educational policies and the right to education” and the IEAL, Education International for Latin America.

Important figures from the education system of several countries in the region participated, including the writer and academic Gary Anderson, professor at New York University in the United States.

Gary Anderson argued that, to envision the future of education, we must first "understand all the problems we have had in the four decades of neoliberal social policies, how they have left us with a fragile superstructure in the country, and how they have intensified inequalities. The pandemic is an opportunity to avoid repeating the same pedagogy and the same education as before, and to reimagine and rethink public schools."

Regarding her participation in the panel on “Inequalities and Public Policies in the Wake of the Pandemic,” she explained that “we discussed how to reimagine public schools after the pandemic, and how popular education could inform the reimagining of public schools in Argentina. I gave a series of examples of alternatives that have already been reimagined in Argentina, such as community-based high schools, cooperatives in communities, examples of public schools in Argentina that have experimented with trans students, for example, and other students who have not typically been well served in traditional public schools, and how these educational experiments that have flourished in Argentina could inform how we can rethink pedagogies and public education.”
