 Cuba's recognition of Pablo Vommaro

El Center for International Policy Research (CIPI) of Cuba awarded a recognition as Associate Researcher to the Academic Secretary of CLACSO, Pablo Vommaro, already a group of professors and academics, who have been maintaining a close collaboration with that Center attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for years.

Pablo Vommaro He thanked them for the honor and stated: “I am deeply honored by my appointment as a research associate at CIPI. I greatly value this recognition and hope to honor it through my actions and practices. This brings me much closer to CIPI, a flagship institution for future studies in the field of international relations in Cuba, the Caribbean, and the entire region, which I have supported and strived to assist for years as part of the CLACSO network of member centers. Its Conferences on Strategic Studies are a benchmark forum that has steadily gained prestige and influence over the years, as well as academic and political standing to strengthen alternative voices in international relations. While grateful for and celebrating this appointment, I once again raise my voice against the criminal blockade that Cuba has endured for decades and demand its immediate end, in accordance with the UN resolutions that mandate it.”

Among other award winners, they were also recognized as members of the CLACSO Network Jacqueline Laguardia, co-coordinator of the Working Group “Crisis, responses and alternatives in the Greater Caribbean”, and Leandro Morgenfeld,co-coordinator of the Working Group “Studies on the United States”.

Jacqueline Laguardia held: “The position of Associate Researcher awarded by the Center for International Policy Research (CIPI) is an honor that strengthens my commitment to the center and its researchers. CIPI is a leading institution in Cuba and the region on Cuban foreign policy and international relations. Many of us eagerly anticipate its annual discussions on strategic foresight and regional scenarios. In my case, CIPI's analyses of the Caribbean and Latin America have been invaluable and have enriched my understanding of the region and my work as a professor and researcher at the University of the West Indies. At CIPI, I have always found enthusiastic support for many of the initiatives we promote through the CLACSO Working Group on 'Crisis, Responses, and Alternatives in the Greater Caribbean,' as well as through the Norman Girvan Chair of Caribbean Studies. The faculty's swift and insightful response to even the most diverse and urgent proposals is a source of admiration and inspiration.”

At the same time, Leandro Morgenfeld, he said: “It is a joy and an honor to have received the invitation from CIPI to become a research associate. I have been participating in various academic activities at the center for years and know many of its members. In September 2017, during a visit to Havana to receive the Haydée Santamaría Essay Prize, awarded by Casa de las Américas and CLACSO, I participated in a conference at ISRI with several colleagues from CIPI, and from there we deepened our academic, political, and personal ties. Furthermore, the CLACSO Working Group on 'United States Studies,' which I have co-coordinated since 2016, includes several CIPI academics. Since then, we have shared conferences, workshops, discussions, and publications in different countries. CIPI is a fundamental reference point in Latin American social sciences. I hope that this fruitful academic relationship continues and deepens.”

José Ramón Cabañas RodríguezThe director of CIPI expressed his gratitude for the systematic exchanges of work with the appointees, pledged to continue developing the academic spirit of research from Political Science and International Relations in the face of hegemonic attacks that attempt to silence thought from the South, and emphasized that the possibility of continuing to grant this status to other scholars will be analyzed annually.
