Recognition of Gerónimo de Sierra

Within the framework of the XIV National Congress of Political Science “Politics in Uncertainty. Global Reorderings, Domestic Realignments and the Question of Transparency”, organized by the Argentine Society of Political Analysis (SAAP) and the National University of San Martín, with the participation of CLACSO, a well-deserved recognition was given to the Uruguayan professor on Thursday, July 18. Gerónimo de Sierra for his career in research on regional integration.

De Sierra is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, an Emeritus Active Researcher Level 3 of the National System of Researchers, an Emeritus Member of the Uruguayan Academy of Sciences, former President of ALAS (Latin American Association of Sociology), former Director of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), and former Vice Rector of the University for Latin American Integration (UNILA).

He is the author, among many other works, of the essential anthology “50 Years of Political Sociology – Uruguay and Latin America,” published by CLACSO in 2017, which, in the prologue signed by Alberto Riella, recalls that “Gerónimo de Sierra is part of a small handful of intellectuals from the 1960s who marked the central features of the social sciences in Latin America, and who starred in a profound and creative dialogue with the most relevant thinkers of the last half of the 20th century… His work, presented in these texts, clearly shows us the main axes of reflection of the social sciences and, in particular, of the political sociology of the last fifty years, which accounts for the broad continental dialogue contained in his research.”

The tribute was attended by many of Don Gerónimo's colleagues and students, including Karina Batthyány, Executive Secretary of CLACSO, Uruguayan historian Gerardo Caetano, and researcher Daniela Perrota, who spoke to CLACSO TV.
