Condemnation of the attempted assassination of Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner
Latin America has experienced profound democratization processes since the arrival of left-wing governments in different countries of the continent from the end of the last century, which generated changes in social policy agendas to address the inequalities and inequities that have historically affected impoverished populations or "the nobodies" as the Vice President of Colombia, Francia Márquez Mina, called them.
These “nobodies” have taken a place in the political space, which generated the loss of power of the traditional elites who historically governed these territories, producing important transformations in various spheres of social reality, with redistributive policies and with the expansion and recognition of the rights of women and diverse groups.
In the middle of this second decade, we began to experience a process of regression resulting from the promotion and positioning of neoconservative, neoliberal, and neopatriarchal discourses that took hold through the rise to power of right-wing or far-right governments in our countries. This marked a scenario of persecution, judicialization, and imprisonment of leaders to silence them and thus silence the project they have led in their territories.
In Argentina, after a period of neoliberal government between 2015 and 2019, progressive forces triumphed again in the 2019 elections, with Alberto Fernández as president and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner as vice president, a leader who in our continent has embodied the struggle to reposition this agenda of change.
As a Working Group, we condemn the attempted assassination of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, which we consider an attempted political femicide, that occurred on September 01, 2022, and we call for a fight to strengthen a democratic and peaceful discourse in the face of lethal hate speech. Feminisms will continue to challenge all forms of patriarchy, authoritarianism in all its expressions, and neoliberal policies.
