We condemn the threats against the life of Colombian researcher Luis Trejos Rosero
Statement from the CLACSO Working Group
Social movements, armed groups and the peace process
The Working Group on Social Movements, Armed Groups and the Peace Process of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) expresses its strongest rejection of the threats against the life of the Colombian researcher and university professor Luis Trejos Rosero by organized crime groups on the Colombian Caribbean Coast.
Professor Trejos researches topics related to violence, illegal armed groups, and post-conflict scenarios. He also currently teaches at the Universidad del Norte (Barranquilla) and is a full member of the CLACSO Working Group on “Social Movements, Armed Groups, and the Peace Process.”
The Colombian state has the obligation to guarantee the life and honor of all its citizens, as well as freedom of expression and opinion. It is well known that between February 2016 and November 2018, more than eighty land restitution leaders were murdered in Colombia. Colombians must understand that political opposition is a central feature of democracies and that a political opponent is not a personal enemy.
For all these reasons, we ask for solidarity with our Latin American colleague.
