What political consequences do protests and mobilizations produce? What strategies do different governments follow to address them? Why do they sometimes provoke crises in regressive governments and in others lead to electoral victories for progressive political forces? What are the legacies of these protests and mobilizations for addressing the renewed political, social, economic, cultural, and environmental challenges in the region? With the aim of exploring these questions, this book, the first fruit of the alliance between CLACSO and ALACIP, presents the winning project of the research call "Latin American and Caribbean Political Systems in the Face of the New Wave of Mobilizations and Social Protests." Its pages analyze the wave of protests that occurred in 2019 in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Colombia from the perspectives of politics and economics. The detailed study of these protest processes transcends the 2019 context to contribute to the understanding of the complex interplay between politics and society in democratic contexts. This volume represents a major contribution to understanding the dynamics of current social protests in the countries of the region and their place in the challenges facing the political systems of our continent.
