Statement on Guatemala

CLACSO, true to its principles of contributing to the consolidation of democracy and the exercise of citizenship, expresses its solidarity with the people of Guatemala who, since October 2, 2023, have mobilized in defense of democracy and the rule of law.
The main demand of this movement, led by indigenous and ancestral authorities of the native peoples, and joined by students, merchants, migrants, women's groups, social and neighborhood organizations throughout the country, is that the popular vote expressed in the elections held on August 20, 2023, in which the winning duo obtained 60% of the votes, be respected.
The people's decision is being challenged by institutions that should be protecting the rights of the majority, not a particular group, and it contrasts with the stance of regional and international organizations, electoral observation missions that have certified the legality and legitimacy of the election results, attesting to the transparency of the elections.
We express our appreciation to the people of Guatemala for maintaining the protests and demonstrations in a forceful but peaceful manner, resisting and fighting for democracy, respect for the rule of law, and conditions for free citizen expression to prevail in their country.
