Condemnation of the coup d'état perpetrated against the people of the Plurinational State of Bolivia

We urge an immediate end to the violence against the Bolivian people.

El CLACSO Working Group: Legacies and Perspectives of Marxism expresses its condemnation of the coup d'état carried out last Sunday, November 10, against the people of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, as well as its solidarity with comrades Evo Morales and Álvaro García Linera and, in their name, with the thousands of Bolivian militants, activists, citizens who are being victims of the brutal repression of the fascist gangs commanded by Mesa and Camacho.

We applaud the pacifist and highly democratic vocation, made transparent in the act of resignation of our comrades Morales and García Linera from their executive positions, to urge those responsible for the violence - the military, the police and, of course, the racist Bolivian elites - to change their attitude and to seek a peaceful solution to the crisis that these same people, with imperial support, have unleashed against our sister country.

As Comrade Evo said in his resignation speech, this process of transformation leaves a formidable legacy in terms of restoring the dignity of the peoples and nationalities that make up Bolivia. Evo Morales has represented and continues to represent hope for the peoples of Our America. Now looms the danger of revenge and racist and class-based resentment from the traditional Bolivian elites and their traditional military and police servants, who have viciously turned against this courageous people. The “new” element, already underway in Brazil, is the fundamentalist religious discourse used to portray Bolivia's regression to a time of colonial and racist domination as divine will, and not as what it truly is: the will of the powerful who have refused to accept that the march of history is on the side of the peoples who struggle and achieve their liberation. This new imperial aggression is a sign of imperial desperation in the face of the resurgence of struggles in Chile, Argentina, and Brazil.

As the Working Group on the Legacy and Perspectives of Marxism, we urge an immediate end to the violence against the Bolivian people and demand respect for the lives, physical and moral integrity of our comrades Evo Morales, García Linera, and all individuals and groups supporting the project of social transformation in this South American country. The current aggression against the people of the Plurinational State of Bolivia should awaken the consciences and transformative energies of our peoples. We also celebrate the decision of the Mexican government, led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to offer asylum to our comrade Evo Morales and members of his government.
