Statement against the attack committed in El Salvador

El CLACSO Working Group Anti-imperialism: transnational perspectives from the global southThe Salvadoran government strongly condemns the shooting attack carried out on Sunday in downtown San Salvador against a caravan of members of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN). The attack left two dead (Gloria Rogel de López and Juan de Dios Tejada Portillo) and five wounded.

This attack occurred in the context of the legislative and municipal elections scheduled for February 28th in El Salvador. Given the repeated criticism and contempt shown by the President of El Salvador toward the 1992 Chapultepec Peace Accords, we strongly urge that these accords be respected and that the current administration ensure their effective implementation. Furthermore, we emphasize that it is the duty of the authorities to investigate the acts of violence and prosecute those responsible.

We reiterate our concern regarding these events and call upon the Salvadoran authorities to guarantee the safety of candidates for elected office, as well as the safety of supporters and members of all political forces participating in these elections.
