Post-Graduation Program in Social Services – Brazil

 Post-Graduation Program in Social Services – Brazil

Fatima Grave Ortiz, Coordinator

The Post-Graduation Program in Social Services of the Escola de Serviço Social of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro offers, on a regular, continuous and free basis, the Post-Graduation courses strictly speaking in Social Services, our Master's and Doctorate levels. Its academic and administrative activities are carried out at the headquarters of the Escola de Serviço Social, Campus da Praia Vermelha, maintaining professional dialogue with the other Units of the Center for Philosophy and Human Sciences of UFRJ, as well as with other Brazilian Universities, South America and European countries, especially Portugal, England and Italy.

Of an academic nature, of an interdisciplinary nature and in face-to-face modality, the aforementioned courses integrate the pedagogical project of the ESS of UFRJ taken as a whole, it is worth saying: the pedagogical project developed in our Academic Unit at the level of graduated and post-graduate training. Its guiding principles are the values made explicit in the foundation of the Code of Professional Ethics of Social Assistance: the recognition of freedom as a central ethical value and the political demands inherent to it; uncompromisingly defends human rights and rejects arbitrariness and authoritarianism; expansion and consolidation of citizenship; defense of the deepening of democracy; positioning in favor of equity and social justice; guarantee of pluralism and option for a professional project linked to the process of construction of a new societal order, without dominação-exploração de classe, etnia e gênero. To conduct a training compatible with these principles, only three of the elementary parameters of the pedagogical project of the ESS of UFRJ:

1) The Brazilian social reality demands theoretical analyzes capable of substantiating interventions that efficiently affect the causes and consequences of the “social quest” of a country that is still characterized as one of the most asymmetrical and exclusive worlds;

2) the established and emerging demands of the labor market for social assistants and teachers and researchers in the Social Service area that, since the last two decades of the 20th century, have undergone significant modifications and;

3) a university understood as a space for the production of socially relevant knowledge, an open territory for debate and confrontation of ideas, a field of research and experimentation, an area of democratization and socialization of critical mass, a framework for societal renewal and innovation, a locus of intellectual and civic formation and human.

Teachers and students of graduation and post-graduation have their attuação governed by an academic policy established in a conception of training from an interdisciplinary perspective that recognizes the necessary relationship between theoretical reflection and the dynamics of social life and stimulates an attitude of permanent investigation in the face of reality, resulting from the emphasis in research activity. The principles, parameters and policies mentioned are valid for the ESS Graduation and Postgraduate Courses of UFRJ and do not confirm the unity between these two training levels; or that it is long to deny its differentiation that it is as much as its objectives, or, even, as much as its theoretical protagonism. Different from the graduation that aims to train professionals qualified for immediate entry into the labor market, the post-graduation stricto sensu têm for the purpose of scientific training and aperfeiçoamento of the professional qualification of researchers and teachers who work in the field of Social Services and related areas, have as precipup objectives: a qualification for higher-level teaching, aiming at the expansion of teaching and interdisciplinary research in Social Services, not Master; The stimulus is the promotion of the development of breeding and interdisciplinary research in the field of Social Services, not Doctorate. Emphasis is placed on the capacity and responsibility of the post-graduation courses with the production of knowledge capable of contributing as critical thinking in the area of Social Services; where the privilege is given to theoretical reflection, anchored or not directly in research of an empirical nature, in the cases of the Academic Master and the Professor. In addition to reconhecimento dessa unity in diversity, the pedagogical project of ESS/UFRJ also affirms the complementarity between the post-graduation and graduate education: the consolidation of the post-graduação is conceived as one of the conditions for the qualification of the graduação (with that contributing contributions theoretical-methodological to this) and requalification of graduation is an input to the development of post-graduation (as that promoting, through two challenges to which it is forced to respond, post-graduate research). The implementation of the training project of our Academic Unit has been guaranteed through the participation of teachers in these two levels in teaching activities, extensive and, most especially, of research that is given especially, but not exclusively, through two 15 Research Nuclei/Groups/Laboratories existing in the ESS of UFRJ, where the research activities of post-graduation teachers and students, graduate monograph advisors, Scientific and State Initiation scholarship holders are carried out. Nesses Núcleos/Grupos/Laboratórios is gathered to quase totality of teaching and student intellectual production.

Its academic and administrative activities take place at the School of Social Work's headquarters on the Praia Vermelha Campus, maintaining a fruitful dialogue with other units of the UFRJ's Center for Philosophy and Human Sciences, as well as with other universities in Brazil, South America, and European countries, especially Portugal, England, and Italy.
