Concern over the crisis at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala

The CLACSO Steering Committee states:

His concern about the institutional crisis caused in the University of San Carlos of Guatemala-USAC, the only public university in that country, given that the electoral process for the position of Rector-2026-2030, held on April 8, was denounced by the university community, social sectors, at the national and international level, as fraudulent.

The internal bodies that directed that process excluded the democratically elected electoral bodies of students, teachers and graduates, because they were not aligned with the group that currently claims control of the University.

Despite a series of legal appeals filed in the relevant courts to prevent this illegality from being carried out, the demand for justice was not heeded.

The university community does not recognize the result that is being imposed on a person who does not meet the requirements to lead the University and is maintaining a peaceful protest outside the central campus of USAC.

We express our solidarity with students, teachers, and workers who demand real, democratic, transparent, and law-abiding university autonomy, which calls for the opening of the university campus, the restoration of rights to voters, and the holding of new elections to guarantee the historical, academic, legal, and institutional recovery of the University.
