Concern over the attack on democracy in Guatemala
We, the Latin American academics comprising the CLACSO Working Group on Feminisms, Resistance, and Mancipation, express our deep concern regarding the attack on democracy in Guatemala. We strongly reject the attempts to undermine the constitution and politicize the judiciary surrounding the general elections of June 25, 2023, and the attempt to disregard the results.
Its results. It is evident that dominant sectors see their interests threatened and are trying to block an alternative whose human rights agenda is projected to win in the second round. We denounce these actions, carried out through legal subterfuge by officials of the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Judiciary, with the intention of suspending the Semilla party, as improper according to the country's Electoral and Political Parties Law.
We support the citizens' reaction that has condemned what they consider a violation of the vote already cast, and who have taken to the streets to demand respect for the popular will. We stand in solidarity with women of all nations who, through their various organizations, have come out in defense of the constitutional order, convinced that, although they continue to be relegated in the current political system, it is
It is necessary to preserve the institutional framework in order to continue demanding their civic and political rights.
From the GT we demand that the conditions be ensured so that the second round of elections, already called by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal for August 20, 2023, can be carried out without setbacks and that the free exercise of the vote is guaranteed to every citizen in Guatemala.
We join the numerous calls made by regional and international organizations, electoral observation missions, social, trade union, student, migrant, and women's organizations to express unconditional solidarity with those who resist and fight for democracy, respect for the rule of law, and conditions for free citizen expression to prevail in that country.
