Global concern over the Argentine president's hate speech in Davos

President Javier Milei's remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos have raised alarms in the international community. His attacks on minorities, women, migrants, and the LGBTQ+ community have been labeled as hate speech that violates fundamental human rights and promotes dangerous polarization.

In an incendiary speech, the Argentine president described feminism, diversity, and inclusion as part of a “woke epidemic” that, according to him, must be eradicated like a “cancer.” These words provoked a wave of criticism from international organizations, social movements, and political figures across the ideological spectrum. In particular, his derogatory comments toward transgender people, same-sex couples, and migrants were denounced as incitement to violence and discrimination.

Among his statements, Milei associated transgender people with “hormone treatments that mutilate children” and labeled same-sex couples who adopt children as “pedophiles.” He also attacked feminism, calling it “a quest for privileges,” and criticized laws against femicide for “discriminating against men.” Regarding migrants, he described them as “hordes that abuse, rape, or kill.”

Milei's speech sparked an immediate reaction in Argentine society, with massive demonstrations rejecting his words. Under the slogan "Life is at risk. Enough! We're never going back into the closet," thousands of people gathered in Lezama Park in Buenos Aires and in other cities across the country. LGBTQ+ organizations and feminist movements warned about the danger of enabling violence through hate speech.

The mobilization continued with a large march on Saturday, February 1st at 16 PM, from Congress towards Plaza de Mayo from Buenos Aires, as well as other cities in the country and abroad, as a show of solidarity with the affected communities and rejection of speeches that violate human rights.

The Ni Una Menos collective stated that these declarations are a "global performance of misogynistic, homophobic and transphobic authoritarianism" that could lead to an increase in political violence. 

An agenda that threatens human rights

Meanwhile, the Argentine government is working on a package of measures that some critics have labeled “anti-feminist.” These proposals include removing the crime of femicide from the Penal Code and budget cuts to inclusion and diversity programs.

President Milei has emphasized his intention to lead a “cultural crusade” against what he calls “woke ideology.” However, these actions and speeches are being viewed with concern by the international community, which warns of the danger of legitimizing hatred and discrimination from the highest levels of power.
