For the unrestricted respect for Human Rights in Nicaragua
On numerous occasions, since the CLACSO Working Group on Feminisms, Resistance and Emancipation We have spoken out to condemn the repressive acts of the Nicaraguan government, including the criminalization of social protest, the closure of three thousand social organizations, opposition political parties, and dozens of independent media outlets, as well as the arbitrary arrests of prominent figures with political, social, peasant, student, feminist, and academic leadership roles who have expressed their opposition to the direction the political regime has taken in their country. We have joined the many voices internationally that have denounced the inhumane conditions suffered by hundreds of political prisoners during their incarceration and have demanded their release.
We express our outrage at the measures taken on February 9, 2023, by the dictatorial government, which expelled 222 Nicaraguan citizens from its territory. These citizens had been held as political prisoners for three years. This forced exile, carried out in violation of their fundamental human rights, is compounded by the application of a constitutional provision hastily approved by the National Assembly that strips them of their nationality and permanently prohibits them from holding any public office in their country.
The most recent abuse, which occurred on February 15, is the stripping of nationality and confiscation of property from 94 people who had chosen exile in recent years. This measure by the Managua Court of Appeals affects writers, activists, journalists, and religious figures who have also maintained a critical stance toward the actions of the current government.
In the face of these arbitrary actions, which constitute a clear violation of inalienable human rights, we call upon civil society organizations, United Nations System bodies, governments of the region, international cooperation agencies, and socio-political and academic networks:
● to express their solidarity with this group of people and with the Nicaraguan people.
● Organize actions that emphasize the mandatory nature of the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and their inviolability.
We urge the consideration of strategies and actions that will enable the restoration of the rule of law and institutional order in accordance with the democratic process advanced in the last decades of the 20th century, overcoming state violence that tortures and targets critical voices, particularly women's rights defenders. The right to nationality is undeniable and must therefore be defended and guaranteed.
For the unrestricted respect of Human Rights!
