CLACSO Working Group on Culture and Cultural Policies
When assessing cultural policies in Latin America during the first two decades of the 21st century, there seems little room for optimism. However, it is impossible to deny that there are some positive aspects in the cultural sphere that suggest that, in the coming years, if certain commitments in the relationship between the state and culture are renewed, favorable conditions for cultural development can be achieved. The hallmark of democracy has shaped cultural practices for several years; the expansion of public interest to marginalized areas of the arts, heritage, and culture as a consequence of diversity policies is another positive feature; and the commitment of culture to the Sustainable Development Goals places cultural activity at a level of relevance it lacked in previous decades.
