Poverty and social policies

The CLACSO Working Group on Poverty and Social Policies was formed in 2000 as a collective that seeks to study and critically debate the living conditions of people and families in a region deeply impacted by poverty.

In its more than 20 years of existence, it has consolidated itself as a group committed to a critical social science, promoting innovations in the theoretical-methodological tools for the study of the social question and sensitive to analyzing the changes in public and government agendas in different spatial and temporal contexts.

The individual and collective research of the group, whose members express different disciplinary traditions and theoretical-analytical approaches, has covered a variety of complex topics.

Since its creation, the GT has held a large number of thematic working meetings that have resulted in the publication of books and articles in specialized journals, as well as participating in academic events of various national and international institutions. 

From 2020 onwards, the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus had a particularly significant impact on people's living conditions, affecting the most vulnerable populations the most severely. This resulted in a sharp increase in the number of people living in poverty, and especially in extreme poverty. 

In that context, successive governments strengthened existing programs and policies and created new ones to mitigate the emergency. Three years after the worst of the pandemic, a dismantling of many of the measures adopted is evident. 

The new events triggering various types of social and economic crises unfolding on a global scale generate greater poverty and inequality; calling on the members of the Working Group to critically study the causes and design new types of transformative strategies and social participation to address the old and new situations of poverty and inequality.
