Criminal prosecution of journalists and attacks on freedom of expression in Peru

El CLACSO Working Group on Collective Memories and Practices of Resistance expresses its deep concern about the attacks on freedom of expression in Peru.

We are alarmed by the growing hostility toward independent journalists investigating corruption and irregularities, such as the case of Gustavo Gorriti. The Prosecutor's Office's recent attempt to seize his mobile devices seriously jeopardizes the safety of his sources and obstructs his reporting.

This situation is aggravated by the worrying concentration of media in the hands of a few groups, which further limits access to plural and diverse information.

We also want to express our special solidarity with Gerardo Saravia, journalist, anthropologist, and member of the Working Group “Collective Memories and Practices of Resistance.” Saravia was investigated for allegedly inciting terrorism due to comments posted on his personal Facebook page questioning several police operations that resulted in the arrest of dozens of people accused of this crime. Although this investigation was closed due to a lack of evidence to support the charges and the recognition that Gerardo Saravia's comments fell within the exercise of freedom of expression, the attacks continue.

Far-right groups are staging protests in front of various institutions, mentioning his name and making false accusations of terrorism, which have already been dismissed by the public prosecutor. He is also constantly harassed on social media. These actions have negatively impacted his work and professional performance.

We condemn the harassment and criminal prosecution of journalists. The Gorriti and Saravia cases are not isolated incidents in Peru; they seek to silence and discipline critical journalism and represent a worrying democratic backsliding.
