Peace for Colombia

In 1981, the United Nations General Assembly established September 21 as the “International Day of Peace”, to promote the “strengthening of the ideals of peace, both among all nations and peoples and among the members of each of them”.

CLACSO has always analyzed and supported the complex peace process in Colombia, with its advances and setbacks, and on this September 21st offers a sound report dedicated to the South American country, shaken by repeated assassinations of social leaders and where a sector of the FARC took up arms again in response to the non-compliance with the agreements by the government of President Iván Duque.

Climate action for peace

“Combating climate change to protect and promote peace around the world” is the UN campaign message for 2019.

Climate change poses clear threats to international peace and security. Natural disasters displace three times more people than conflicts, forcing millions to flee their homes and seek safety elsewhere. Salinization of water and crops is jeopardizing food security, and the impact on public health is escalating. Growing strains on resources and mass migrations are affecting every country on every continent.

On September 23, the United Nations is convening a Climate Action Summit with concrete and realistic plans to accelerate action to implement the Paris Agreement. The Summit will focus on the core of the problem: the sectors that generate the most emissions and the areas where building resilience could make the biggest difference.
