To transform society. The democratizing left of socialist inspiration
The left has historically emerged as a collective project to deliberately transform society through diverse means, all aimed at the rational construction of ways of life characterized by justice. Such a project gained momentum during the 19th century, shaped major processes in the 20th century, and has almost vanished from the world stage at the beginning of the 21st. In this essay, Rodrigo Arocena argues that renewed left-wing alternatives, inspired by socialism, are necessary to confront the strong trends toward the degradation of the quality of collective life, both today and, even more so, tomorrow. The discussion of such an assertion must be pragmatic: its content must be developed, the resulting proposals clearly formulated, and they must be tested against reality.
