Pandemic and crisis: An approach from the social sciences

The Academic Bulletin “Sociology and Politics Today” of the Network of Sociology and Political Science Programs of Ecuador, in its September 2020 edition, addresses the topic “Pandemic and Crisis: An Approach from the Social Sciences”.
In his presentation, he states that “without a doubt, current events, both globally and in Ecuador, are marked by the global pandemic caused by the spread of Covid-19, which began in early 2020 in China and quickly spread to every continent. By the end of March, most countries had declared lockdowns, while cases grew exponentially. This transformed it from a mere health problem into an economic, social, and cultural event. Currently, the region facing the greatest challenges is the entire American continent.”
What initially emerged as a pandemic, already serious in itself, has evolved into a multifaceted crisis: economic, health, food, and environmental, which, according to some authors, calls into question dominant Western and capitalist paradigms. In Ecuador, this situation presents itself with its own specific characteristics, exacerbating a rampant political and budgetary crisis, aggravated by structural inequalities.
We present the contributions of eleven professors from the universities that are part of the Network, with a first part that brings together analyses with a general focus, and a second part that groups articles with an analysis of the situation in Ecuador. We aspire to contribute to this debate with an approach from the social sciences.
