Pablo González Casanova

The Latin American Council of Social Sciences warmly greets Pablo González Casanova y del Valle, born in Toluca, Mexico, on February 11, 1922, who is celebrating a century of life in service to the social sciences and humanities.

A Mexican lawyer, sociologist, and critic, he received the Latin American and Caribbean Social Sciences Award from CLACSO in 2012 and was decorated by UNESCO in 2003 with the José Martí International Prize for his defense of the identity of the indigenous peoples of Latin America.

González Casanova is an honorary member of the Mexican Academy of Language, and was rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the study center that will host the 9th Latin American and Caribbean Conference of Social Sciences #CLACSO2022.

Among other positions, he was director of the National School of Political and Social Sciences from 1957 to 1965, president of the Council of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, based in Santiago, Chile, from 1959 to 1965, and director of the Institute of Social Research at UNAM from 1966 to 1970. During his tenure as president of UNAM, from 1970 to 1972, the Colleges of Sciences and Humanities (CCH) and the UNAM Open University System were created. He also served as president of the Latin American Sociological Association from 1969 to 1972, and from 1983 to 1985, he was a professor at several prestigious universities and a member of the World Commission on Environment and Development (UN).

Pablo González Casanova is the author of more than twenty books published by CLACSO, including: I am Fidel, Open Crossroads (Latin America and the Caribbean. Society and critical thought Abya Yala), The Flight of the Phoenix (Capital: Critical Readings 150 Years After Its Publication), The New Sciences and the Humanities, and Latin America: Democracy at the Crossroads.
