New attack on gender policies in Argentina

The Argentine government announced on Thursday, June 6, the dissolution of the Undersecretariat for Protection against Gender Violence, the area to which the former Ministry of Women, Genders and Diversities had been degraded upon assuming office on December 10, 2023.

In six months in office, Javier Milei's far-right government defunded, dismantled, and gutted policies aimed at preventing, assisting, and protecting women and LGBTQ+ individuals experiencing violence. In response, organizations working for the rights of women and LGBTQ+ people denounced the severity of the measure due to its implications for gender and diversity policies and the uncertainty surrounding the future of the 650 workers responsible for delivering these essential services to the community.

The dissolution of the Undersecretariat implies “a brutal contempt for the public sector, and we urgently need the State to protect, support, and assist victims of gender violence and reduce inequality gaps,” said Estela Díaz, head of the Ministry of Women and Diversity of the Province of Buenos Aires, the only one remaining in the country.

It was precisely with that administration that CLACSO signed an agreement to support the archive of the publishing house of the former Ministry of Women, Gender and Diversity (2019-2023), which is constituted as a space for consultation, active participation, cooperation and dialogue with civil society, social organizations and the academic field whose fundamental purpose is to promote sociocultural transformations that bring us closer to a more just, equal and free society free of gender-based violence.

It includes content related to aspects specifically concerning promoting and guaranteeing the elimination of discrimination between women and men in all aspects of life; the conditions suitable for raising awareness and preventing, punishing and eradicating discrimination and violence against women in any of its manifestations and areas; and the removal of sociocultural patterns that promote and sustain gender inequality and power relations over women.
