Note of repudiation against the antidemocratic acts that occurred in Brazil, on January 8, 2023

O CLACSO Working Group on Critical Legal Thought and Sociopolitical Conflicts publicly expresses repudiation of the anti-democratic and coup plotting acts that occurred in Brazil on January 08, 2023.

The attacks that occurred on the buildings of the Supreme Federal Court, the National Congress and the Palácio do Planalto, headquarters of the Three Powers of the Federative Republic of Brazil further demonstrate that there is dissatisfaction with the victory of a project at the polls in the last presidential election. These are terrorist attacks against democracy and the normality of institutions.

This news includes, even, the support of ideologues, politicians and private financiers (national and international) in favor of groups created by the ideas of Bolsonaroism. These demonstrate that violent barbarism is not in favor of fighting against the social, economic and socio-political inequalities that afflict the Brazilian nation, but rather a project of power that does not cease to try to impose its reactionaryism, both in legal ways and in fact.

A quick and immediate action is necessary to impose limits on these violent attacks that were previously announced since the victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for the position of President of the Republic of Brazil. This response must consider the importance of a democratic and popular project that is so important for the most necessary interests.
