The Latin American Council of Social Sciences joins the voices of all democrats around the world in condemning the attempted coup d'état by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro who attacked public buildings in Brasilia and called for the overthrow of the government of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

We say “Never again” to the arrogance of the extreme right and anti-democratic forces that seek to impose their anti-popular policies through violence.

In immediate response, Lula da Silva decreed federal intervention in the country's capital, warning that the "terrorists (...) will pay with the full force of the law."

In our region, the presidents of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and Chile, Gabriel Boric, were among the leaders who condemned the coup attempts. “All my solidarity with Lula da Silva and the people of Brazil. Fascism has decided to stage a coup. The right wing has failed to uphold the pact of non-violence. It is urgent time for the OAS to convene if it wants to remain a viable institution and uphold the Inter-American Democratic Charter,” Petro wrote on his social media accounts.

"This is an unacceptable attack on the three branches of the Brazilian government by Bolsonaro supporters. The Brazilian government has our full support in the face of this cowardly and vile attack on democracy," Boric stated.

Argentine President Alberto Fernández, pro tempore president of CELAC and Mercosur, called on member countries to unite "against this unacceptable anti-democratic reaction that is attempting to take hold in Brazil." He asserted: "Democracy is the only political system that guarantees freedoms and obliges us to respect the popular will."

CLACSO extends its solidarity and support to the new government of Brazil and its people at this crucial moment, which we expect will strengthen the progressive and democratic path initiated on January 1st, after 4 years of an unpopular, racist administration that only brought pain and division to the country.
