For peace and dialogue in Venezuela
Today Venezuela is experiencing a serious situation, which foreshadows the possibility of an invasion or a civil war, violating the principles of sovereignty of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
The political confrontation between the Bolivarian process and its opponents, allied with foreign interests and responsible for the events that have transpired, has been marked by years of deep polarization and has worsened with the intervention of governments both within and outside the region. These governments have adopted openly belligerent positions and interfered in Venezuela's affairs and decisions. The role of the United States government in the most recent events is particularly evident.
Wars and invasions, under the euphemism of “humanitarian interventions,” have never been a solution to any crisis. On the contrary, they have always worsened the situation, with human and material losses and wounds that persist for a long time.
Our continent has traditionally been characterized by its fervent pursuit of peace and has contributed important doctrine on the non-use of force, non-intervention in the internal affairs of states, respect for sovereignty, and the legal equality of all states. At the end of January 2014 in Havana, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) declared the region a Zone of Peace.
We know that, since the beginning of 2019, the escalation of the conflicts has generated more hardship and suffering for the Venezuelan people, in the context of serious obstacles to food supplies, medical care and resources, inflation and the decline in workers' real wages, lack of transportation, and general problems with public services. The crisis, as always, is particularly devastating for the most vulnerable, and they will be the first to suffer any kind of violence that occurs.
We have decided to call upon the International Community to, honoring the principle of non-intervention, support peace, dialogue and negotiation as a solution to the current situation in Venezuela.
We are convinced that Venezuelans have the responsibility, integrity, and capacity to resolve their own problems and conflicts. We support the implementation of a dialogue mechanism as a peaceful and democratic alternative that prioritizes peace to achieve a comprehensive, inclusive, and lasting solution.
CLACSO stands in solidarity with the democratic forces, academic entities and popular movements of Our America and the world that fight for the principle of non-intervention, and support peace, dialogue and negotiation in the sister Republic of Venezuela.
