No to foreign government interference in Colombian elections
Given the current situation in Colombia, various member centers of the CLACSO Network declare that:
We reject any kind of interference from any foreign government in our country's political process.
We defend without compromise the self-determination of peoples, which consists of the sacred and fundamental right that all communities, nations and countries have to freely choose their political status, their model of government and pursue their own economic, social and cultural development, without any kind of external interference.
We condemn the invitation made by Mr. Abelardo De la Espriella, the current presidential candidate, for the government of the United States of America to "monitor" the Colombian electoral process.
We also reject the decision by the United States government, announced through statements by former President George W. Bush and the Under Secretary of State, to "monitor" the Colombian electoral process and sanction those involved in alleged vote-buying. We maintain that each country's sovereignty to organize its own elections and choose its political system is inviolable and cannot be subject to pressure or intervention from this or any other foreign power.
