Neomaternalisms

The last few years have witnessed the explosion on social media of countless new mandates and rules about how women today should experience motherhood. These expressions, based on a renewed exaltation of the maternal role in women's life plans, as well as a substantial limitation of fathers' participation in caregiving, have revamped old arguments of traditional gender mandates by incorporating new meanings and foundations that, while seemingly innovative, in practice perpetuate structural inequalities surrounding caregiving.
This book aims to address these neo-maternalistic expressions and practices in Latin America through an analysis of their manifestations on social media. Its reading offers a stimulating exploration that argues why this phenomenon contrasts with regional socio-political processes of advancing regulations and public policies (and to a lesser extent, practices) that promote shared social and gender responsibility in caregiving.
