Violence in its various forms is a constant in the history and social dynamics of Latin America and the Caribbean. These manifestations are rooted in structural axes of racism, discrimination, sexism, and exclusion, resulting in the denial of rights for the vast majority of the population, including children, youth, women, LGBTQ+ people, rural populations, Indigenous peoples, and Afro-descendants. In recent years, violence has intensified, due in part to neoliberal policies that have led to the precariousness of human living conditions and environmental degradation. This is compounded by political instability and the crisis of democracy, as well as the rise of religious fundamentalism, which has eroded the guarantee of human rights.
It is in this context that CLACSO launched the research call for teams on "Multiple Violences in Latin America and the Caribbean: Genders, Dissidences, and Otherness," and this book is the product of that research process. Its chapters explore the complex web of manifestations of sexual, territorial, economic, institutional, symbolic, political, and physical violence faced by diverse individuals in contexts marked by the exercise of patriarchal, neocolonial, and neoliberal power.
