Mesoamerican women in the defense of territories and collective rights
Based on the stories and accounts of the members of the Alliance of Indigenous, Rural, and Mestizo Women of Mesoamerica (AMIRMM), this Popular Education booklet explores the main territorial conflicts and various forms of violence experienced by Mesoamerican peoples, as well as how machismo and patriarchy make this reality especially severe for women. It also shares the advocacy, collaborative learning, organizational, and self-care strategies that the women of AMIRMM employ as forms of resistance and transformative action. Each section includes questions for further exploration and reflection.
This material is a product of the research "Mesoamerican Women in the Defense of Territories and Collective Rights", developed between 2018 and 2019 by researchers from the Center for Research in Culture and Development (CICDE) of the State Distance University of Costa Rica together with members of AMIRMM, thanks to the honorable mention granted by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) within the framework of the Berta Cáceres Award to teams of researchers "The struggle of women for equality in Latin America and the Caribbean".
Eva Carazo, a researcher at CICDE-UNED, and Heidy Murillo, a member of the Alliance of Indigenous, Rural and Peasant Women of Mesoamerica, present their work in the following podcast.
