Student movements and activism
El CLACSO Working Group on Student Movements and Activism The aim is to consolidate a space for critical, interdisciplinary and intergenerational reflection for the analysis of student movements and activism in the 20th and 21st centuries.
We will problematize classical and contemporary theories on social movements from the perspective of regional realities, exploring
protest tactics, organizational forms, memories, intersectionalities (gender, race and ethnicity) and local, national and transnational scales, betting on situated knowledge from the Global South.
From this perspective, four lines of inquiry are proposed for addressing student movements and activism:
- Thinking about multiple temporalities of the 20th and 21st centuries, not just key milestones like 1918 or 1968;
- consider different educational and territorial levels, not just university levels;
- to escape the geographical reductionism that only focuses on large capital cities and to conceive of the cartography of Latin America and the Caribbean in an integral way
- recognize the diversity of political identities (left, right and beyond classic dichotomies).
This Working Group prioritizes regional diversity, with an emphasis on the inclusion of researchers, professors, activists, and education policymakers from southern, central, and northern Latin America and the Caribbean. To this end, we incorporate young members to foster intergenerational dialogue, seek cooperation with other CLACSO Working Groups, and promote South-South and North-South academic dialogue, giving importance to collaboration with priority areas in our region, such as Central America, the insular Caribbean, Bolivia, and Paraguay.
