Ministry of Agrarian Development of Brazil and CLACSO
CLACSO has taken a significant step in its commitment to agrarian reform and social dialogue in Our America in general, and in Brazil in particular, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Minister of State for Agrarian Development and Family Farming of Brazil, Paulo Teixeraand by the Executive Director of CLACSO, Pablo Vommaro, on Tuesday, February 24th in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, within the framework of the “International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development” ICARRD+20.
The Memorandum covers, among other aspects, the exchange and mutual cooperation in the development and promotion of studies, in order to strengthen family farming and rural communities, cooperativism and the fight against rural inequalities, within the scope of their respective areas of action and competence.
Pablo Vommaro He emphasized the importance of this agreement, stating: “We consider the framework of the Second International Conference on Agrarian Reform, which began in Brazil in 2016, to be fundamental for the signing of this memorandum. It is a space where academia, social movements, and public policies converge at the national and regional levels, which aligns with the objectives of CLACSO and the Brazilian Ministry to build bridges and facilitate social dialogue.”
From the government's perspective, the minister Paulo Teixeira He highlighted the inclusive and strategic nature of this alliance, "which is built on the participation of important intellectuals, academics, and social movements," recognizing the vital role of institutions like CLACSO in this process. The convergence of these actors is seen as a cornerstone for the future.
The initiative not only focuses on the national level, but also underscores the importance of regional integration. In this regard, Vommaro He emphasized that “consolidating regional integration is crucial, especially at a time when the unity of Latin America and the Caribbean is so important. In this context, Brazil plays a fundamental role.” This regional vision is central to CLACSO, which seeks to expand the impact of these policies throughout the continent. The collaboration will allow them to “advance an alliance that will enable us to follow up on current debates, developing joint research and advocacy activities,” ensuring continuity and depth in their work.
