Social metabolism / Environmental justice
The CLACSO Working Group on Social Metabolism/Environmental Justice is aimed both at consolidating political ecology as a field of study and analysis of the conflict over the appropriation of nature in Latin America, and at influencing the struggle of communities for an alternative “bottom-up” development.
We intend to promote transformative praxis, the fundamental change, demanded by indigenous peoples, rural and urban grassroots communities, their recognized local leaders, workers and entrepreneurs of local economies, excluded from the “development” plans formulated by central governments to respond to the interests of large national and transnational capital.
We want to contribute to local responses against political colonization and economic parasitism, promoted by Latin American states that maintain the status quo of the region as a supplier of raw materials for the voracious international market.
We aspire to contribute to the formation of an alternative political leadership capable of carrying out the political, social, and economic transformation based on the conservation of ecosystem functions as the foundation for the materialization of the multiple, creative, and inclusive genius loci , still in a very embryonic state in our mega-diverse region.
