Memories, Human Rights and Democracy in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile
2023 is a year marked by the 50th anniversary of the civic-military coups in Uruguay and in Chile and the 40th anniversary of the return to democracy in the Argentina, events in the contemporary history of Latin America that shape current challenges in the search for alternatives to strengthen democracy and keep the flame of memory alive.
UruguayOn June 27, 1973, then-President Juan María Bordaberry dissolved Parliament with the support of the military and police forces. That day marked the beginning of the civic-military dictatorship that lasted until March 1, 1985.
ChileOn September 11, 1973, with the assault on the La Moneda Palace and the death of the constitutional president Salvador Allende, a dictatorship led by General Augusto Pinochet was established, ending the Popular Unity government. In 1990, Patricio Aylwin assumed the presidency, inaugurating the democratic transition.
ArgentinaOn December 10, 1983, with the assumption of power by the radical Raúl Alfonsín, the civic-military dictatorship established on March 24, 1976, with General Jorge Rafael Videla at its head, came to an end.
The military regimes imposed in South America during the 50s, 60s, and 70s promoted neoliberal policies through fierce repression, including assassinations, disappearances, political prisoners and exiles, and a coordinated effort known as Operation Condor. All of this is discussed in the podcast “Memories, Human Rights and Democracy in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile.”

This production includes audio recordings from various media outlets during the coups in Uruguay and Chile and the return to democracy in Argentina, testimonies from key figures, historians, and other sources, including: Uruguayan National Television, Montevideo City TV, the Uruguayan production company “Memory and Society”, the Uruguayan Cinematheque, Radio Magallanes and Radio Cooperativa in Chile, TVN in Chile, Canal Encuentro in Argentina, Radio Colonia in Uruguay, the Memory Park archive in Buenos Aires, Public Television in Argentina, and the General Archive of the Nation in Argentina.
We have grouped this series of events from the contemporary history of the Southern Cone of Latin America into a series of activities and productions called “40 – 50 – 50”The first of which was the Forum “Social Dialogues 40 Years After the Democratic Recovery in Argentina”, organized by CLACSO and the Floreal Gorini Cultural Center of Cooperation in Buenos Aires on March 21 and 22, 2023.
