Beyond the International Decade for People of African Descent

In Havana, Cuba, from October 21 to 25, 2019, the Third International Postgraduate School in Havana took place, entitled “Beyond the International Decade for People of African Descent,” which delved into the challenges of research, teaching, and political action in the International Decade for People of African Descent.

Consulted for CLACSO TV, Carlos Álvarez Nazareno, an activist for the human rights of Afro-descendant, African, migrant and LGBT communities in Argentina, highlighted the importance of “Building the School here in Havana because of the political context,” which “This implies that our own academics can strengthen their thinking, share it, and also mainstream an anti-discriminatory, anti-racist and, above all, feminist perspective within CLACSO.”

At the same time, Teresa Mújica Morga, former Mexican Federal Deputy, said that "At school I have found a lot of knowledge, a lot of ability, a lot of strength, a lot of vision, a lot of desire to build new ways of recovering the historical memory of our ancestry, of our culture, of our traditions."

Finally, the Cuban Rosa Campoalegre Septien from the Center for Psychological and Sociological Research, contributed that “This school signifies Latin American and Caribbean unity and the unity of the so-called minorities, unity from the peripheries. And we know that when the periphery presses, the processes advance.”
