Manifesto of Repudiation of Chacina in Rio de Janeiro
O GT CLACSO Afro-descendants and counter-hegemonic proposals expresses its deepest repudiation of the chacina that occurred in the complexes of Penha and do Alemão, not Rio de Janeiro, which resulted in more than a hundred deaths.
This is yet another episode of state violence that affects, disproportionately, the black and poor population of the peripheries. What is called “police operation” exposes, in truth, the most cruel face of structural racism and social inequality that has marked the country since its formation.
The lives lost cannot be treated as numbers. Every death is testimony to a public safety policy that continues to criminalize poverty and treat black bodies like others. The search for chacinas in Brazilian favelas is unacceptable and demands a firm response from civil society, public power and justice institutions.
We reaffirm our commitment to the unconditional defense of life, human dignity and two fundamental rights. We demand independent investigation, accountability of those involved and urgent review of security practices that transform popular territories into war zones.
Black lives matter. Peripheral lives matter. Nenhuma morte a mais.
