The latest attacks by the Trump administration against Cuba
Just five days after the United States and the world watched in astonishment the terrorist action of a group of President Trump's supporters against Congress, his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo included Cuba on the list of state sponsors of terrorism, which will impose greater financial restrictions on the island and intensify the already genocidal existing blockade.
Perhaps never before has the hypocrisy and fallacy of American politics been so clearly illustrated as with this Administration, which has made lying and deceit its defining characteristics. fake news an attribute of its internal and external policy, to again accuse a country that is a victim of terrorism, such as Cuba, of being a "promoter" of it.
This inclusion is a continuation of the cruelty and viciousness of this Administration, which has adopted more than a hundred sanctions and criminal measures against Cuba, even during a pandemic. It qualifies as a political reward for extremist anti-Cuban sectors, especially in Florida. It is known that a clear motivation is to impose additional obstacles to any prospect of recovery in bilateral relations between Cuba and the United States. There is no doubt that it is also a manifestation of impotence in the face of the resistance and dignity of the Cuban people and their government, whom neither this Administration, nor the eleven previous ones, have been able to subdue.
For all these reasons, the Steering Committee of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) and the Cuban centers that are members of CLACSO strongly condemn this action by the United States government. We urge the administration of President-elect John R. Biden to reverse this situation, take note of the global and U.S. reaction against this decision, and, in this context, collaborate in the swift search for a solution to the conflicts with the island, exacerbated by the measures of the Trump administration, and work toward lifting the blockade. We call on the international academic community to express its condemnation and repudiation of this latest aggressive action by the U.S. State Department.
