"Feminist movements are the only ones that challenge capitalism."

María Alicia Gutiérrez is a sociologist, feminist, professor, and researcher at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the National University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in Argentina. A member of the National Campaign for Legal, Safe, and Free Abortion, she was part of the first CLACSO Working Groups on Gender and Feminism.

After highlighting the progress made in feminist movements and in terms of legislation in recent years, Gutiérrez was emphatic in stating that "it is a lie that nothing was happening in the '90s, it is an absolute and total lie in terms of feminism and other social movements."

The interview took place during the LASA meeting, the Latin American Studies Association, in Boston, USA, in May 2019.
