The days of the Women's World Cup
Nemesia Hijós, Verónica Moreira and Rodrigo Soto-Lagos, Coordinators and members of the CLACSO Working Group on sport, culture and society, present “The days of the World Cup: critical and global perspectives on France 2019”.
“The convergence of feminism and football,” the prologue states, “is evident in the demands emerging across the various national teams. Despite significant differences between them, a common thread unites the voices of the players: the fight for the full recognition of their rights to play freely and under the same conditions as men. In all of them, the demand to be identified and legitimized as athletes is present. Thousands of women are breaking down prejudices and expectations by kicking the ball at their feet. FIFA and the mainstream media know this. That is why, in this tournament, as in no previous edition, the financial support from the governing body of the sport is noticeably greater, and news about women's football circulates more frequently, attempting to circumvent stereotypes and stigmatizing descriptions. However, despite progress in the visibility of women's rights, the fight for gender equality remains a challenge for countries around the world.”
They then add that, “in these Notebooks of the France 2019 World Cup, the Latin American Council of Social Sciences, through the Working Group on sport, culture and society, has decided to focus the discussions on women's football, considering different dimensions, in relation to politics, representations, gender and the market…”
