Changes in rural work in Latin America

Uruguayan sociologist Mauricio Tubio Albornoz, a member of the Department of Social Sciences at the University of the Republic of Uruguay, analyzed the current state of rural labor in his country and the region for CLACSO TV. Interviewed during the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences in El Salvador in March 2019, he highlighted that “the profile of the rural worker has changed somewhat. The salaried rural worker who used to be a farmhand on horseback no longer lives in rural areas but rather on the outskirts of cities.”

Tubio, a member of the CLACSO Steering Committee for Argentina and Uruguay and a member of the Working Group “Agrarian Transformations and Rural Workers”, also took stock of the debits and credits of progressive governments in several countries of the continent in recent decades.
