The essays in this book were selected for the 2023 Pedro Krotsch Prize. Established in 2009 by the Gino Germani Research Institute of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires and the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), the Pedro Krotsch Prize has the dual purpose of stimulating rigorous research on universities and honoring the legacy of one of the most renowned and dedicated Latin American researchers on higher education. The nine chapters of this publication explore the modes and consequences of the commodification of universities, as well as how the deployment of evaluation—often conceived and developed in the Global North, as some of the texts demonstrate—becomes a conditioning factor in the practices of universities in the region. Reading this book offers important perspectives, all stemming from ongoing research projects within the diverse university systems of Latin America.
