The articles compiled in this book seek to deepen our understanding of the effects of trade and investment treaties in Latin American and Caribbean countries. They stem from a call for papers issued by CLACSO in conjunction with the Transnational Institute (TNI), the Latin America Better Without Free Trade Agreements Platform, and the Latin American Society of Political Economy (SEPLA), with academic support from the School of Politics and Government of the National University of San Martín (EPyG/UNSAM) in Argentina. This initiative is part of the ongoing work of the CLACSO Working Group "Lex Mercatoria, Corporate Power, and Human Rights." The objective was to foster the development of analytical frameworks that allow for an understanding of both the legal aspects of these treaties (their clauses) and their effects on economies, the environment, human rights, workers, small and medium-sized enterprises, access to public services, and women. The texts have been mostly prepared by young researchers who are in their first steps of postgraduate study on economic globalization, trade and investment treaties and their effects on the different countries of our region.
