The plots of time

On Thursday, August 5, CLACSO presented the book “The Plots of Time: Family, Genders, Memories, Rights and Social Movements,” the essential anthology by Elizabeth Jelin.

Participants included: Karina Batthyány, Executive Secretary of CLACSO, Evangelina Caravaca and Guido Sciurano from Conicet of Argentina; Fernanda Pampín moderated.

The publication of Elizabeth Jelin's essential anthology aims to highlight the original, committed, and stimulating nature of her work and to demonstrate her approach to the relationship between biography and history, her definition of genre as a set of questions of a transversal nature for the social sciences, and her positioning of the actors' point of view as a privileged focus for understanding the social world.

Three main thematic areas allow us to organize the vast body of her research: memory and human rights, gender, family and work, and social movements. These themes do not represent stages in her thinking, nor can they be considered isolated, mutually exclusive fields of research. On the contrary, they are three frameworks, three intellectual concerns, that run through her career with different emphases. They are coordinates from which it is possible to read her work and, in turn, understand how her contributions were crucial in structuring these fields and providing a regional perspective.
