CLACSO Working Group on Economic Elites, the State and Inequality
Latin America has exhibited extremely high levels of socioeconomic inequality as a result of long-standing historical processes. The renewed interest in studying elites in relation to inequality has occurred both in countries historically marked by extreme inequality and privilege at the top, such as Brazil, the Andean region, Mexico, and the countries of Central America and the Caribbean; and in those with a legacy of high human development and relative equality that, in recent decades, have experienced regressive processes of increasing inequality, such as Chile and Costa Rica; and in countries with pendulum swings and various situations of conflict, such as Argentina. This book is the result of exchanges within the framework of the CLACSO Working Group “Business Elites, State, and Domination.” From different approaches and perspectives, the group set out to study economic elites, their interactions with different spheres of the state, and the forms of power reproduction in Latin America. Through the authors who make up the book, this work seeks to recover the diversity of traditions, collections of studies and theoretical-methodological perspectives on the subject, as well as contribute with a comparative view of the region based on the analysis of concrete socio-historical processes of the recent past and contemporary dynamics.
