The emerging right wing in Latin America

The emerging right wing in Latin America

The Department of Political Science of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of the Republic (UDELAR) of Montevideo, Uruguay, and CLACSO organized the International Seminar on Tuesday, October 3. “Ultras, radicals, new, alternatives? The emerging right wing in Latin America”.

Right-wing parties and movements have traditionally been a focus of attention for numerous social scientists around the world. However, the electoral success and political relevance of emerging right-wing movements in the early decades of the 21st century have sparked greater interest in recent years, stemming from debates about their ideological characterization, their use of social media, their critical views of modernity and globalization, and their populist profiles. As many authors have pointed out, these phenomena seem to point to more disruptive and uncertain scenarios than a mere performative reinterpretation of the more familiar right-wing movements. These are among the concerns that underlie our international seminar entitled “Ultras, Radicals, New, Alternatives? Emerging Right-Wing Movements in Latin America,” organized by the Department of Political Science of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO).

The seminar has two objectives. First, it aims to offer a comparative theoretical and conceptual framework, allowing us to observe the nature of the phenomenon across different party systems and types of democracies. The conceptualization and empirical evidence regarding right-wing parties in developed democracies is certainly a crucial focus of interest, particularly in order to observe their adaptability or expansion beyond the northwestern quadrant of the world. Second, this comparative perspective will be complemented by two types of contributions that will enrich the more analytical discussion, while also illuminating our understanding of specific cases and their evolution. Specifically, the seminar seeks to provide an in-depth look at a series of relevant cases in the region (Brazil, Chile, and Argentina), where right-wing parties and movements have been and continue to be significant actors in the political system. At this level, Uruguay will also occupy a prominent place in the seminar, given the progress that the social sciences have made in the study of right-wing movements and the most recent processes in the country.
