Utopia: A Task for Academia?
The Permanent International Seminar Latin American Emancipations: Between Utopias and Dystopias (ELAUD), formed by the Postgraduate Program in Social Policy and Human Rights of the Catholic University of Pelotas, Brazil (PPG-PSDH/UCPel), in alliance with the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), the Latin American Sociological Association (ALAS) and the Central Americanist Articulation O Istmo, with the support of the Postgraduate Program in Law of the Federal University of Pelotas (PPGD/UFPel) and the Postgraduate Program in Law and Social Justice of the Federal University of Rio Grande Foundation (PPGDJS/FURG), organizes on June 1 and 2 the ELAUD Meeting: Emancipation and future(s): Utopia, the task of academia?
This meeting seeks to consolidate the space for dialogue and formative debate on emancipations and civilizational horizons in Latin America and to promote a network of articulation and training with the CLACSO member centers in the Southern Cone, based in the city of Pelotas, in the far south of Brazil.
In that context, on Friday, June 2nd, Pablo VommaroThe Director of Research at CLACSO is leading the training workshop “Opportunities and Possibilities for Participation in the CLACSO Network from Brazil.” He is also participating in the launch of Volume I of the book series Isthmian Perspective: “History, Current Situation, and Questions about the Central American Region in its Bicentennial,” along with Aleksander Aguilar-Antunes (Brazil/El Salvador – O Istmo/UCPel), Amaral Arévalo (El Salvador/Brazil, O Istmo), Carmen Elena Villacorta (El Salvador/Argentina, National University of Jujuy / O Istmo), Denia Román Solano (Costa Rica, University of Costa Rica, O Ismo), and Wagner Iglecias (Brazil, USP).
At the same time, Lia Pinheiro Barbosa[Name], from the State University of Ceará and a member of the CLACSO Steering Committee for the Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru region, will participate in the panel “Academic Extractivism: What is it? (And how can we avoid it)” alongside Ana Clara Henning (PPGD/UFPel), Sheila Stolz (PPGDJS/FURG), and Ana Silvia Monzón (Guatemala, ALAS), moderated by César Augusto Costa (PPGPSDH/UCPel). At the closing session, [Name] will deliver the keynote address “Emancipations as Legacy, Practice, and Prospects of the Popular Field in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
