Environmental Justice and the citizens affected by the Peripheral Ring Road project in Lima
The podcast reviews the idea of Environmental Justice enshrined in US legislation as a measure to prevent environmental racism in environmental policy decision-making.
It presents the concept of Environmental Justice and reviews, from the Peruvian capital, through the voices of potentially affected citizens, their experiences in the implementation process of the Peripheral Ring Road project. The difficulties encountered include access to information and informed participation, the lack of spaces for dialogue with the project's promoting agency, and the intimidation of citizens into selling their homes without independent technical and legal advice, among others.
The project's implementation threatens their homes, their neighborhood, and their daily lives with risks such as increased temperatures, reduction and destruction of green spaces, and the stress of uncertainty about the future of their property. This is even more serious considering that some of these residents are vulnerable due to being elderly, speaking Spanish as a second language, or not having their property registered, among other factors. This case highlights the importance of considering urban planning from an environmental justice perspective.
