The geopolitics of the 21st century is largely determined by the global environmental crisis (climate change, biodiversity loss, ozone layer depletion, water and air pollution, among others). From the perspective of some critical thinkers, this crisis began with the expansion and rise of the European capitalist system, and it is clear that hyper-industrialized, high-consumption societies are responsible for this situation. The powers of the Global North, led by the United States, view the environmental crisis as a threat to their national security and the maintenance of their standard of living, which translates into the development of an environmental geopolitics aimed at increasing their decision-making power over the global management of the planet.
