The era of inequalities
On Thursday, September 12th and Friday, September 13th, the auditorium of the main building of the National University of José C. Paz (UNPAZ) in Argentina hosted the IV Conference on Democracy and Inequalities with the participation of more than 500 researchers, 32 working groups and 15 special activities - including book presentations and screenings, panels and exhibitions.
In that context, on Friday, Karina Batthyány, Executive Director of CLACSO, participated in the closing panel “The era of inequalities: consequences and challenges in 21st-century Argentina“along with Fernando Porta (UNQ/CFI) and Luis Campos (IEF/CTA). The opening remarks were delivered by Silvina Storino, Vice-Rector of UNPAZ, and the discussion was moderated by Johanna Maldovan (CONICET/IESCODE/UNPAZ). The CLACSO Working Group “What Work for What Future?” participated.”
The meeting, organized by the research institutes of UNPAZ in conjunction with the Secretariat of Science and Technology, calls for debate and reflection on the multiple and profound inequalities that permeate Latin American societies, from different perspectives and disciplinary fields, with the aim of joining efforts to recreate political projects that can reverse inequalities and deepen democracies.
Within this framework, the debate will explore the multiple dimensions of analysis that allow us to identify why, two decades into the 21st century, Latin America is the most unequal region in the world. This inequality is manifested in aspects such as income levels, access to land and housing, decent working conditions, health, education, and social protection systems, as well as in modes of production and technological development, among others. All of this will be addressed in light of the various intersectional factors of gender, race, and class, which are essential for understanding the complexity of inequalities in contemporary societies.
The opening and closing panels benefited from the contributions of Pablo Vommaro (Academic Secretary of CLACSO), Eduardo Rinesi (UNGS) and Emilce Cuda (Secretary of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, Holy See), among others. Both panels will include the participation of Rector Darío Kusinsky; Vice-Rector Silvia Storino; the Director of the Institute of Social Studies in Contexts of Inequalities (IESCODE), Nora Goren; and the Academic Coordinator of the Conference, Johanna Maldován Bonelli (CONICET/IESCODE/UNPAZ).
