Autonomy is one of the main words the Zapatistas use to express their experience. They use it to describe the form of collective organization they are building in the rebel territories of Chiapas—since the declaration of 30 “Rebel Municipalities” in December 1994—and more broadly since the creation of the Good Government Councils (JBG) in August 2003. In this way, they are demonstrating that, despite enormous difficulties and amidst numerous dangers, it is possible today to create a reality different from that imposed by the world of globalized money. It can rightly be said that Zapatista autonomy constitutes one of the most important, enduring, and radical anti-capitalist “real utopias” currently existing worldwide.
